Archive for December, 2011
at least, I think we are. I feel like blogging for the first time in a long time, so I’m going to go with it. Snow flew this week, so that must have been my cue.
So what’s been going on lately? Yesterday was the culmination of a 10-week learn-to-run clinic with Running Room, which I enjoyed enough to decide I shall keep going. The next clinic doesn’t begin until January, but for the month of December I have to keep things up since I’m running the 5k Resolution Run on December 31st.
Oh, right. I did my first race yesterday, too, but if you follow me on Twitter or Facebook you already knew that. I completed the 5k Santa Shuffle (for Salvation Army) in just under 40 minutes, but I don’t have any more specific a time than that. The race was fairly informal.
Of course, it was the most I’d ever run without traffic lights on my side. Traffic lights are both a gift and a curse, because they baby you and allow you to catch your breath before your scheduled stops. The resulting exertion had me feeling lightheaded and rather off-kilter. I am curious as to whether that combined with the endorphin effect results in the fabled runner’s high. I certainly felt like I was, at any rate. Er, ahem. Not that I would know or anything.
I would like to run the 10k on Ottawa Race Weekend, so I’m making that my current goal. It will require me to do the 5k and then I’m not sure what, since it will be difficult to line things up. I’ll figure it out.
Aside from running, much of my downtime has been absorbed by my Wii. I played Super Paper Mario and loved it; it may be the first console game I’ve ever finished. Super Mario super fun.
Work is going well. At the moment I’m the midst of the push to be in good shape for year-end, so there’s a lot to do, and a lot of staying late happening. But that’s okay. On running days I have an excuse to leave the office.
Some crocheting has been happening, but it’s difficult to be productive while playing video games, so it’s suffered a bit. Reading is also still happening but without the commute I had in the summer, I have less time for that either. I’m presently reading The Girl in the Steel Corset by Kady Cross. Mostly I’ve been enjoying listening to my music and all the new things out, including the summer’s 3 Doors Down (Time of my Life), the new Hedley (Storms), Muppets: The Green Album (so good), and, unapologetically, a whole lot of Hanson. (I’ll be going to their Toronto show in February.)
The fish tank continues to be a work in progress. There’s no water in it yet, but the focal piece is done. Here’s a photo of it before I applied the final silicon. I’m still fairly excited about the project, but the tank needs upgrades before I’m willing to start planting it. A new light, heater, filter and canopy, for instance. I’ve sourced them, but I think the actual implemenation will need to wait until after Christmas.
Speaking of Christmas, final travel plans should be in place by the end of the week. I’d like to see as many people as I can, so I’d like to get that worked out.
Oh, and I saw The Muppets. The ending made me cry, it was so absolutely fantastic. See it.
