Cartomancy is my main method of divination, and as such earns its rightful place here on As Within as a tool I use for developing my intuition.

I have been studying cartomancy since approximately 2002, when I was experimenting with types of divination in order to find the one that called to me. I came across it completely by accident and had known no one that practiced it before, and became completely fascinated with the idea.

The occasionally reliable Wikipedia defines Cartomancy as “fortune-telling or divination using a deck of cards.” This may confuse my readers who think it obvious that I must have known people in my life who read cards, and of course I have! Tarot, rune cards, and various other types of card-based divination have been around me all my life. But little did I know that the word “cartomancy” over time came to specifically refer to the version of cartomancy done with simple playing cards.

I had difficulty with Tarot, and tended to find the symbology lost on me. I was pleased to discover playing cards in their simplicity: numbers and suits printed on white cardstock, and all the possibilities that held for purely intuitive communication.

That intuitive communication does have its drawbacks, however. Because the cards rely so much on intuition, there seem to be very few sets of definitions accepted as standard among card-readers, and those that do exist are highly adapted. So too has my own experience been: I have drawn from many sources, and from the ones with the most to offer me I have drawn the system which works for me.

So if you’re interested in the system I have developed for myself, follow me on to my Cartomancy Definitions, my Cartomancy Spreads and my Cartomancy Resources.
